Typically,toothpick production processes can be divided into three . Namely;
- The log stage,
- The billet state and
- The finishing.
The Log Stage;
Thi is the first process of toothpick production .First,the logs are held up by grippers into a de-barker, which creates a smooth, barkless cylinder in two passes of the blades.Hence, the log is transported into the unraveling machine, which strips the log like paper of about 1.06 mm thick using 12 blades.
The Billet Stage;
The billet is th end result of the unraveling machine . Manually, A billet which is always 1.8 kilos is removed and carried to a puncher. The puncher makes identical cuts of about 8,000 toothpicks in a second.However, The finishing , is a small soft piece of wood.
The Finishing Stage
Finally,these soft toothpicks are hardened in a dryer for 12 hours and then polished using talcum powder and friction for another four hours. The hardened toothpicks are then set to pass through a sifter which finally separates the damaged ones/wood debris from the good ones . The good pointed tips toothpicks are sorted into a blower and conveyor which plays the role of counting and packaging them at the rate of 747,500 per hour.
The finished product can be packed in small plastic containers of different sizes to suit the demands of the market.(buyers)
As a matter of fact,the market for toothpick in Nigeria is large and sustainable with a national population of 165,000,000 people. With most of the tooth pick products in the market been imported, the investor can be assured a ready market for the product.
